Dr. James Cockerham, a seasoned criminal justice practitioner, leverages his extensive real-world expertise to enrich both his research and teaching endeavors. His professional journey spans various government levels, encompassing roles as a local patrol and community relations officer, a state-level criminal investigator, and a legislative analyst in the realm of criminal and civil justice. 

 

Within Montreat College, Dr. Cockerham assumes multifaceted responsibilities, serving as an assistant professor, program director for public administration, and Department Chair. He currently leads a significant grant project with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, scrutinizing the impact of the Teen Court system on juvenile recidivism. Additionally, he fulfills the role of book editor for an upcoming interdisciplinary book on political participation.

Overview:

​Citizen participation is a key element of democratic governance, promoting government legitimacy, accountability, and trust. This involvement can range from voting and activism to non-participation, with both active and inactive roles impacting governmental processes. Although vital, achieving high citizen engagement comes with challenges such as financial and efficiency costs. The volume aims to explore these dynamics through interdisciplinary contributions, covering topics like civic engagement, transparency, digital citizenship, and the role of public opinion in political participation.
